To Minnesota Nurse Practitioners,

Welcome to your state organization! The Minnesota Nurse Practitioners (MNNP) board of directors is actively working on your behalf to support and advocate for you and your practice.

According to the MN Board of Nursing (1). There are over 4300 nurse practitioners (NPs) licensed in the state of MN with 3290 currently employed in the state as of May 2015 (2). According to the U. S. Department of Labor, our profession is one of the top 10 fastest growing occupations (4), with more than 222,000 nurse practitioners nationwide (3).

Our fast growing profession must have support from within our field to succeed. We learned in our NP programs:  "Join your NP organization for professional support!" My experience supporting this message and NP organizations have led me to where I am today as the MNNP president.

In 1986, after completing my NP education, I moved to Austin, Texas and found that there was neither a local nor state NP organization. I encountered other NPs who were also seeking professional support and we organized to form the Austin Area Nurse Practitioner Alliance, which I chaired for 4 years. Soon after, I was a founding board member of the Texas Nurse Practitioners organization. Today, after 27 years this is a large, well established state NP organization.

In 1999, I moved to Minnesota from Texas and I planned to join the state nurse practitioner organization and found, again, that there was no statewide NP organization. At the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) national conference, I connected with other Minnesota NPs who were interested in forming a statewide organization. The discussions that resulted set a foundation for the establishment of the Minnesota Nurse Practitioners (MNNP) organization in 2009, under the founding president Amy Lewis, followed by Brian Goodroad in 2011, and Rachel Prosser in 2013.

I became MNNP president  in 2015 with an agenda to carry forward the organization's  mission and goals that were established by prior presidents and their boards. As president, I have relied on my past  NP organization experience along with the experiences and engagement of the current board members to move MNNP forward. Here is a sampling of MNNP Board activities since November 2015:

Monitored the 2015-16 legislative session, by our organization's lobbyist, to watch for legislation that could impact NP practice
Organized quarterly social-networking events in the Twin-Cities with plans for further outreach to the greater Minnesota area
Connected with the leadership of Association of Southeastern Minnesota Nurse Practitioners and the Northern Nurse Practitioner Association to discuss areas of collaboration.
Initiated MNNP board of directors action on budgeting and strategic planning
Participated at the statewide MN Inter-Agency Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative meeting
Participated at regional and national AANP meetings
Planned and organized the upcoming 2016 MNNP Annual Conference

I am very encouraged by what we have accomplished since November 2015 and I look forward to the results that we will achieve in the coming year. I invite you to join MNNP and actively participate to  meet the needs of NPs across Minnesota and to move our organization forward.

I look forward to meeting you at the 2016 MNNP Annual Conference October 28-29 in Minneapolis!

Dianne Willer-Sly, DNP, APRN, CNP
President, MNNP
